Award categories

Communication Award

The NSTF Award for communication for outreach and creating awareness of science, engineering and technology (SET) and innovation.

NSTF-GreenMatter Award

The NSTF-GreenMatter Award recognises researchers and organisations working towards achieving biodiversity conservation, environmental sustainability and a green economy.

NGO Award

The NSTF NGO Award is for any non-governmental organisation that has made an outstanding contribution to SET and innovation in South Africa, including technology transfer and education/training activities. 

Research for Innovation Awards

These awards are made to teams or individuals in organisations (corporate or small, medium-sized enterprises) who have made outstanding contributions to SET through research that has led to an innovation in South Africa.

Special Annual Theme Award

Details of this award differ year on year (consult the NSTF website for current updates).

Individual Research Awards

These are all made to individuals based in South Africa, and who are South Africans or permanent residents. The individual must have made an outstanding contribution to SET in South Africa in any field of activity relating to research and its outputs.

There are four categories for individuals, for any field of activity relating to research and its outputs:

  • Contribution over a lifetime (15 years or more)
  • T W Kambule Awards – Researchers: Contribution to research and its outputs – over a period of up to 15 years after award of a PhD or equivalent, predominantly in South Africa
  • T W Kambule Awards – Emerging Researchers: Contribution to research and its outputs over a period of up to six years after award of a PhD or equivalent, predominantly in South Africa
  • Contribution through management and related SET activities (over the last 5 to 10 years).
